Before the ferry, Matej walked us over to Diocletion's Palace on the Split waterfront for a quick tour. We'll have an afternoon here on our return Sunday so he gave us an idea of what we can plan for.
Diocletion was Roman Emperor from 285 to 305 and was the first from outside of the vicinity of Rome. He is known for dividing the empire into two parts - East and West - and for his brutal persecution of Christians.
Born into a common family, he was a skillful politician and worked his way through the military to become top dog. He was also the first Roman emperor not to die in office and retired to his hometown - now Split, Croatia - in a fantastic retirement Palace.
More about this later.
I found my HRVATSKA hat at a kiosk on the way to the ferry - the last one they had!
Our bikes getting loaded on the ferry.
Postira - home for the next three days.
Matej and Milan go over the bikes, safety instructions and Croatian bike/car/road etiquette before we hit the highway.
Our first ride this afternoon took us a few miles into the hills to the village of Doll. This guy was working on his saddle by the roadside.
Beautiful cafe with an old olive press out front. The aqueduct funnels the little rainfall they get into cisterns somewhere below. Brac (pronounced Brach) is one of the largest islands in Dalmatia but has no natural fresh water or springs.
But it has caves.
And olives and grapes.
